We received inquiries from our customers about the recent announcement about the SharePoint Add-In retirement in Microsoft 365. We understand the concerns around this. We will provide clarification and responses to frequently asked questions in this article.
Key points in the announcement
Here are the key messages in the announcement released by Microsoft.
- SharePoint will retire the Add-in extensibility model.
- Important dates: Add-ins will no longer be available for new tenants after November 1st, 2024. Existing tenants using the Add-ins will be fully retired as of April 2nd, 2026. Add-ins cannot be acquired from the public marketplace from July 1st, 2024.
- It is recommended to migrate to or use only SharePoint framework based solutions moving forward.
ShortPoint Add-in versus ShortPoint SPFx
ShortPoint used to offer both Add-in and SharePoint framework (SPFx) versions for SharePoint. However, we have since ended support for ShortPoint Add-in.
We released the ShortPoint SPFx version in September 2018. We actively recommended upgrading for existing customers and offered only SPFx to new customers. This means that the version of ShortPoint currently available in the market is a SharePoint Framework (SPFx) based solution.
Frequently asked questions
How does the announcement affect the use of ShortPoint?
Most, if not all, of our customers already have a ShortPoint SPFx version installed on their SharePoint environments. There is no action required to continue taking advantage of our software solution.
However, if you have ShortPoint Add-in installed, you can upgrade to the latest ShortPoint SPFx version anytime.
How do I check to make sure that I have the ShortPoint SPFx version installed?
You can visit your App Catalog in the SharePoint Admin Center and check the available Apps for SharePoint. You have the modern SharePoint framework version installed if you see ShortPoint SPFx.
How will the changes affect the deployment of ShortPoint to the SharePoint environment?
There will be no changes to the installation and deployment of ShortPoint SPFx to your SharePoint environments. The SharePoint App Catalog will continue to accept and deploy SharePoint framework (SPFx) solutions. Only Add-ins will be prevented from deployment.
