ShortPoint SPFx package needs to be upload to App Catalog in Office 365 SharePoint environment

There are two types of App Catalogs in SharePoint:

  1. Tenant App Catalog
  2. Site Collection App Catalog

The following table explains the differences between the two to help you out decide which one is good for you.

Tenant App Catalog

Site Collection App Catalog

Main Differences

  • ShortPoint SPFx will be available (not installed) for all sites and site collections in the tenant.
  • You need Tenant Global Admin Permission
  • ShortPoint SPFx will be available (not installed) only on the selected site collection.
  • You need Tenant Global Admin Permission only one time during setup. You will need site collection admin permissions after.

Advanced Technical Differences

Deployment Scope
Apps / Add-ins and SPFx solutions are deployed globally across all site collections

Recommendation

This option is good when you want to control ShortPoint app centrally and do not want to have multiple versions of the same app installed in your tenancy. You can centrally manage/upgrade your apps from tenant app catalog.

Apps / Add-ins and SPFx solutions are deployed to a specific site collection

Recommendation

This option is good when:

  1. You want to try ShortPoint
  2. You are only planning to use ShortPoint for a single site collection
  3. You want to have multiple version of ShortPoint installed in different site collections
Authorization
You need to be tenant administrator to manage the apps deployed to Tenant App Catalog

Recommendation

This option is good when your organization security policy does not allow app management authorization any other user except tenant administrator.

Once the site collection has been added to the approved list of site collection app catalog, site collection administrators can manage apps under that site collection

Recommendation
  1. You want to delegate the app management access to a different set of group owners
  2. You want to give group owner freedom to try out different apps to a specific site collection
Security
You as a tenant administrator will have the option to verify all the apps being deployed to your tenancy
You are delegating site collection administrators the option to verify the app being deployed to the site collection. In the case of SPFx solutions, app can get a grant to access other resources of your entire tenancy and this can be security concerns.
Versioning
You will have only 1 version installed globally and you do not have the option to have different ShortPoint versions installed at different site collections
You can make multiple site collection app catalogs and install different ShortPoint
versions to them.
