How to Restore Previous Versions of Your SharePoint Page

Every SharePoint page has a Version History where users can view previous versions of their page:

This article will demonstrate how to use the Version History window to restore previous page versions.

Start the interactive tutorial or follow the detailed steps to learn how to restore previous versions of your page:



Step 1: Open the Version History Window

  • Go to the SharePoint page you want to use and click Page Details.

  • Select Version History.

Step 2: Restore a Page Version

  • Select the page version you want to restore.
  • (Optional) If you want to clearly see the difference between the current version and the old version you selected, toggle on Highlight changes on the page.

  • Then, click the ellipsis icon beside the page version you want to restore.

  • Select Restore.


NOTEClicking Restore does not publish your changes. The page you are seeing is only a draft that still needs to be published.

Step 3: Publish / Republish your page

  • Click the cross icon.
  • Select Publish / Republish to apply your changes.

Modifying the Maximum Number of Page Versions

SharePoint allows you to change the number of page versions that you will be able to see on your Version History window. Start the interactive tutorial or follow the detailed steps to learn how to modify it.



Step 1: Open Site Contents

  • Click the cogwheel icon.

  • Select Site Contents.

Step 2: Open Versioning Settings Page

  • Click the vertical ellipsis beside Site Pages.

  • Select Settings.
  • Click Versioning Settings.

Step 3: Modify the number of major versions

  • Look for the Keep the following number of major versions field and write the number of versions you prefer. You can choose from any number between 1 to 50,000.
