How to Enable Sorting by Field in Sharepoint Search

SharePoint Search functionality is one of the most commonly used feature to display contents in your page. In this article, we will give you some simple steps on how to make SharePoint search even better by enabling a search property to be sortable.

Before we begin

  • Make sure that you are a SharePoint Administrator or SharePoint Farm Administrator to access the SharePoint Admin Center.
  • Make sure that you already have an experience creating/managing search properties

Step 1: Navigate to SharePoint Admin Center

Please follow the step-by-step procedure below, depending on your SharePoint environment.

Step 2: Navigate to Crawled Properties

You are now on the Search configuration page of SharePoint. From here, you need to click on Crawled Properties:

Note: You may also search for the property in the Managed Property tab, by filtering it or manually searching for the property name.

Go to the Crawled Properties Tab

Step 3: Search for Target Managed Properties

In the Managed Properties page, you have two ways how you can look for a property. If you know the property name that you want to modify, you can enter its name and filter it from Managed Property box (1) or you can also manually scroll down the page and look for it under the Property Name column (2).

Search for a property

Note: If you want to know more about creating a custom user profile property, you can check this article: How to Create Custom User Profile Property in SharePoint Online.

Step 4: Click Edit/Map Property

In this example, let's say we want to sort a property named Birthday, which is mapped to the property Refinable18. To edit a property, you just simple need to hover your mouse to Birthday property and a dropdown icon will be shown. Click Edit/Map Property.

Click edit map property

Step 5: Ensure following is enabled

Make sure the Sortable is set to Yes - active.

Sortable should be set to active

Info: If you encounter an issue where this option is greyed out, the workaround would be creating a new managed property that is mapped to that crawled property.

Step 6: Save changes

After modifying this property, you may scroll down to the bottom of the page. On the right side, you will see the OK button. Please click it to save your settings:

Click OK to save settings
