Microsoft has announced steps towards limiting the scripting capabilities in SharePoint. Starting March 2024, they will remove the ability to enable scripting capabilities in the SharePoint admin center. In November 2024, Microsoft will disable scripting capabilities on SharePoint Microsoft 365 environments.
Scripting Capabilities refers to using custom scripts to change specific aspects of SharePoint sites and pages. Enabling Scripting Capabilities is required to be able to use ShortPoint in building and designing Classic pages.
What will happen?
When the Custom Script setting is removed, you will no longer be able to add, modify, or remove scripts within OneDrive and SharePoint sites. Since the scripting capabilities feature is required to run ShortPoint on Classic pages, this change will impact the ability to build and edit Classic pages using ShortPoint. Existing Classic pages created using ShortPoint may also encounter issues.
Creating and editing Modern pages using ShortPoint will not be affected.
This is the Custom Script setting that will be removed from the Admin Center UI:
What actions need to be taken?
While the ability to enable scripting capability will be removed in the SharePoint Admin Center, you can still activate this setting through the use of PowerShell. Check out the tutorials below to learn more:
- Enable Scripting Capabilities with PowerShell for Office 365 available until November 2024 only.
- Enable Scripting Capabilities For SharePoint 2019 On-Premise
After November 2024, Microsoft will disable Scripting Capabilities on SharePoint Microsoft 365 sites. This means that ShortPoint will no longer run on Classic pages going forward. We recommend that you transform existing Classic pages built with ShortPoint into Modern to avoid potential issues and fully future-proof your intranet.
You will find the steps to do this in our support article on ShortPoint Microsoft 365 Classic Pages Deprecation: Transforming Classic Pages to Modern Pages.
