ShortPoint Supports SharePoint Multilingual Pages

Are you planning to build a SharePoint site that caters to languages from the countries your organization has business in? The new SharePoint feature for publishing multilingual pages and news is now available and ShortPoint fully supports it.

Let us explore how this feature works.

Article Contents

Prerequisites:

  • You have a Modern Communication site page or news post with ShortPoint design elements ready for translation to target languages. This feature is not available on Teams sites.
  • You have a designated translator.

Note: Only manually translated content will display in the preferred language. ShortPoint app interface, commands, and non-translated content will display in its original language.

First, enable page and news translations

Step 1: Navigate to Site Settings

Start by clicking the settings cogwheel in the suite bar. Select Site Information and open View all site settings link. This will open the Site Settings page.

Step 2: Add Site languages

Under the Site Administration section, select Language settings and this will bring you to the Site languages window.

Determine the language you want your page or news to be translated into and add it as a site language. To do this, click the Enable pages and news to be translated into multiple languages toggle on and type or select the languages from the drop-down.

Step 3: Set a translator

For each language, add your designated translator under the Translators column.

When you create your multilingual page, an email will be sent to your designated translators to begin manually translating the page. They will also receive a notification if these pages are updated. Once the page translation is complete, you will receive an email confirmation.

Save your changes and proceed to create copies of your default page with ShortPoint design elements for translation.

Next, create pages for translation

Step 1: Open Translation panel

The Translation button should now appear on the tool panel of your site pages and news posts when editing. Identify the page you want to be translated and hit this button to be brought to the Translation panel.

Step 2: Create copy for languages

You can choose to create a copy of your main page for all of your site languages by clicking the Create for all languages button. If you do not intend to create translations for all languages, you can also hit the Create link for the specific language you want the page to be translated into.

All SharePoint web parts and ShortPoint design elements will be copied into a new page designated for a specific language.

Note: This step creates clones of the original page linked to the language. It does not automatically translate the contents of the page. Also, please note that any succeeding changes made to ShortPoint elements on the original page will not sync with the clone pages. This will need to be updated individually. You have the option to use global ShortPoint elements by creating them in ShortPoint Generator to easily implement changes across all pages.

When a page is created, you will be able to View the page from the Translation panel.

They can also be accessed from your Site Pages within separate folders with the language two-letter abbreviation name. Go to your settings cogwheel, click Site Contents, and select Site Pages.

Step 3: Complete manual translations

The translation process is now triggered where your designated translators can work on their assigned pages. They will receive an email with a link to go directly to the page they were assigned to translate.

You will see that these pages are in draft mode from the language drop-down.

Note: This view will not be available if you choose to hide the header using ShortPoint Theme Builder.

Step 4: Translate ShortPoint content

When editing ShortPoint design elements, Edit the element, click the settings cogwheel to access content, and replace them with translated material. Remember to hit Update to save the changes.

In this example, we are accessing content from within a ShortPoint Panel design element:

Other ShortPoint fields that contain display text such as Titles and Subtitles will also need to be translated.

Step 5: Publish language pages

Once pages have completed translation, Publish the pages and this will now appear as a language option for your users. Where available, the translated pages will display for users with that preferred language in their Office 365 personal language and region settings.

Note: This view will not be available if you choose to hide the header using ShortPoint Theme Builder.

You can now easily embrace language diversity with ShortPoint in your SharePoint sites.
